Aaron Maybin?s slight frame is pushed to the unemployment line

Aaron Maybin?s slight frame is pushed to the unemployment lineIt’s not often that the 11th overall draft pick is waived two years after he was drafted. Then again, it’s not often that a defensive end/linebacker shows up to camp at 228 pounds.

But that, so far, is the story of Aaron Maybin’s career. Drafted as a pass-rush specialist out of Penn State, Maybin has recorded exactly zero sacks in two years. In that same time, he has 15 solo tackles. It’s probably safe to say that the Bills expected a little more. Here’s what Buffalo Bills general manager Buddy Nix had to say upon Maybin’s release:

“I don’t know what scheme he fits at that size, unless you’re a strong safety or something,” said Nix. “He says it’s his metabolism and maybe that’s what it is, but he couldn’t hold weight. He was 250 when we saw him at the combine and he was 228 this fall. Now he goes up and down some, but not very high.”

So, who’s in the market for a 228-pound, non-pass-rushing pass rusher with a metabolism problem? Anyone? Anyone? Chicago Bears it is! From Vaughn McClure and Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune:

According to multiple sources, the team has had discussions about Aaron Maybin, who was waived by the Bills on Monday. All indications are the 11th pick of the 2009 draft wants to play for defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli.

It’s easy to poke fun at the Bears, especially since they’re also providing employment to Vernon Gholston, who was also drafted as a pass rusher and produced zero sacks (he’s at four years and counting). But there’s not a lot of risk to picking up Maybin, even if someone claims him off waivers and takes responsibility for his contract. He’s making less than $800,000 this season.

You pick him up, see if you can figure out a way to use him, and if you can’t, you cut him after the season, and you’re out nothing. That’s probably the most likely scenario, but you’re desperate for a pass rush. Why not see if Rod Marinelli can work some magic with him? And if he keeps dropping weight, then maybe you end up with a serviceable nickel back.

Emmy Nominee Randee Heller Talks ‘Mad Men,’ Her Awards Competition & More

The offices of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce got a little shake-up last season on ‘Mad Men’ with the help of a sassy secretary who — shocker! — Don and the guys had zero interest in sleeping with.

Ida Blankenship, Bert Cooper’s veteran desk jockey who was talked about but never seen, was given the reassignment of a lifetime: front and center working Don Draper’s desk. Then (spoiler alert for those who haven’t seen Season 4!) her lifetime ended right there in the office.

Not that Blankenship wasn’t ever a looker or worthy of an office tryst — Roger Sterling even referred to her as the Queen of Perversions when reminiscing about his long-past fling with her — but in her final months on the job, she was much more valued for the comic relief she offered.

That delivery was courtesy of Randee Heller, veteran stage and screen actress who, before Blankenship, was probably best known as Billy Crystal’s lesbian roommate on ‘Soap’ and Danielson’s mom in the first two ‘Karate Kid’ movies.

Now on the heels of her first Emmy nomination, planning for her first ever awards show, Heller looks back on her time as Blankenship fondly … even if she didn’t get to keep any of her wardrobe.

Ndamukong Suh appears to be $20,000 poorer

I suspected that Detroit Lions tackle Ndamukong Suh might be fined for this hit on Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton, and while the league hasn’t released official word yet, this tweet from Suh himself seems to provide all the relevant information.

Ndamukong Suh appears to be $20,000 poorer

Makes sense. His first fine for a hit on Jake Delhomme cost him $7,500. Then he got touched up for $15,000 for this hit on Jay Cutler. So at least the league didn’t double it again. Maybe that’s the special preseason rate.

I know a lot of you disagree with me, but I believe the fine is justified. And sure, maybe opposing quarterbacks are worried about Suh now, and maybe it’s an advantage for him if he’s in a quarterback’s head. But there is a price to pay for what he’s doing. This time, it was $20,000. Next time, it will be more, and if it keeps happening, it will be a suspension.

These are the new rules. You can’t mess with a quarterback’s head. You either adapt, or you get fined $20,000.

Video: Cowboys rookie scores helmet-less touchdown

Follow Yahoo! Sports on Facebook and be the first to know about the most interesting stories of the day.

Because the NFL is all concerned about “player safety,” a little thing like “running helmet-less with the ball toward the end zone while 250-pound linebackers chase you down and try to tackle you by force” is now “illegal.”

Oh, come on. That doesn’t sound dangerous at all!

Dallas Cowboys rookie running back Phillip Tanner would agree. The Dallas native, who used to work at a Texas Stadium concession stand as a youngster, had his helmet ripped off his head during a play in Sunday night’s preseason game against the San Diego Chargers. He somehow broke free from the tacklers and scampered, sans helmet, 23 yards into the end zone for what would have been a touchdown in any game up until this year.

The new rule brought the play back to the point where Tanner lost his helmet. For good measure, the Cowboys were called for an illegal shift penalty that would have wiped out the touchdown anyway. Still, it’s one heck of a play:

We’re unabashed fans of NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” coverage and that clip shows you why. Al Michaels immediately knew the play was dead and still managed to capture the excitement of the play anyway, Cris Collinsworth offered an interesting take on Tanner’s run, and the truck was immediately ready with a clip of the Jason Witten play they referenced.

The season opener on Sept. 8 can’t come soon enough.

Michigan Football 2011: Denard Robinson’s Heisman Hopes, Wolverines Latest News

The Michigan Wolverines averaged the most yards in the Big Ten last season with 488 per game. Unfortunately that didn’t result in many wins as they finished a disappointing 7-6.

They enter the 2011 season with their Heisman hopeful at quarterback in Denard Robinson, who is one of the most explosive players in college football.

Michigan also has a new head coach in Brady Hoke who was the MWC coach of the year last season. He’ll have his hands full.

This defense was one of the worst in the country last season giving up 35 points per game on average.

The Wolverines may have an extremely gifted athlete at the quarterback position but it’s going to take a lot more than that to compete in the Big Ten.

Pittsburgh Steelers Extend Lawrence Timmons’ Contract, Re-Sign Trai Essex

According to Steelers.com, the Pittsburgh Steelers have reached an agreement on a six-year contract extension with starting ILB Lawrence Timmons.

The extension if for six years and $50 million.  This extension will keep Timmons with the Steelers until 2017 (it is reported on Steelers.com through 2015, but simple math says that is a typo) when Timmons turns 31 years old.

Timmons was the first pick of the Mike Tomlin era in 2007.  Tomlin then selected LaMarr Woodley in the second round.

With the re-signing of Woodley and Timmons, the Steelers look to have two of the most dominant linebackers in the NFL set on their roster for the next six years. And that is not counting former Defensive Player of the Year James Harrison.

The Steelers also re-signed Trai Essex to a one-year contract.  Terms of the deal are not yet known.  Essex was an unrestricted free agent.

Essex was a third-round pick of the Steelers in 2005, and started 25 games with the Steelers.  To make room for Essex, the Steelers waived rookie offensive lineman Nevin McCaskill.

Essex has played his career at guard, and could compete for playing time on the right side

2011 NFL Supplemental Draft Results: Raiders QB Terrelle Pryor a Costly Project

When the Oakland Raiders acquired quarterback Terrelle Pryor with the third-round pick in the supplemental draft, they did so at considerable cost.

The Raiders used their 2012 third-round draft pick on the quarterback, and are without second- and fourth-round picks next year as well, losing the second-rounder in trade to the New England Patriots during the 2011 draft, and the fourth when they acquired quarterback Jason Campbell from the Washington Redskins.

Considering the Raiders’ situation in the 2012 draft, it seems to be expensive for the team to pick up a raw talent such as Pryor, considering that he is not available to the team for the first five games of the regular season, and would not likely be ready to play even if he was not.

Developing a quarterback takes time, especially a rookie quarterback who did not participate in the entirety of this year’s training camp; add in that five-game suspension, and it’s clear that Pryor is about a longer-term plan for the Raiders.

Certainly, the Raiders made a strong statement yesterday about Pryor by drafting him with such a high pick, and one can only assume this means the Raiders intend to develop him to be their eventual starter.

Oakland’s quarterback position has been a musical chairs affair in recent seasons, and to have stability at that most important role should serve as a measure of improvement for the struggling squad. But it is as yet unknown how Pryor will perform and whether he will be a noticeable improvement for the team.

However, the Raiders are a team with many holes to fill beyond a project quarterback destined for extensive development, and conventional wisdom holds that these holes are often best filled with draft picks.

Rather, it appears that the Raiders are willing to make the gamble that, once the 2011 season ends, they will be a more complete team, one that does not require the three draft picks they lost to trades and to Pryor.

That is quite a risk to take. Of course, the Raiders have been known to make puzzling personnel decisions, considering their eccentric owner, Al Davis, and his propensity for going against common NFL wisdom, and the Pryor acquisition certainly fits that mold.

Perhaps while many of us laugh now, it will be Davis’ Raiders who get the last laugh. But, it won’t get them draft picks.

Lions lose rookie runner Mikel LeShoure for the season

Lions lose rookie runner Mikel LeShoure for the seasonI wish I could say it was too early for the “Bad news for the Lions” stories to be rolling in, but evidently, that’s not the case. Their second-round draft pick, Mikel LeShoure, tore his Achilles in practice and is finished for the season. From the AP:

The rookie was injured after being hit high by defensive end Cliff Avril during practice Monday. He was carted off the team’s practice field after being attended to by team trainers.

[Head Coach Jim] Schwartz says “he’ll be back, but it won’t be this season.”

It’s terribly unfortunate for LeShoure. He’s known as a tough guy, so I’m sure he’ll be back strong next year, but a major injury like that, depriving him of so much experience that a rookie needs, puts him in a tough spot going forward.

The Lions, too. LeShoure wasn’t slated to be a featured back, but they were counting on him to carry some of the load. At 230 pounds, he was a bruiser who still carried 4.5 40 speed, and would’ve been a nice complement to the smaller, speedier Jahvid Best. The Lions really struggled in short-yardage situations last year (for the last 40 years, really), so LeShoure was a big part of their plans in those situations.

Maurice Morris is on the roster behind him. The Lions could also go out and get a power runner on the free-agent market, though the pickings are a bit slim at the moment. Fred Taylor’s waiting by the phone, if they’re interested.

Cowboys DE Hatcher gets stuck in elevator; live tweets it

Jason Hatcher, a sixth-year defensive end for the Dallas Cowboys, had been having a pretty good training camp in Rob Ryan’s new defense.

But that was before the elevators in the team’s hotel turned on him.

His first move was to pry the doors open and start screaming for help. He got the attention of hotel security, which called the fire department for him. While trapped inside for about 15 minutes, he eventually calmed himself down and then turned to his Twitter followers for solace.

And here’s the above-referenced picture of the firefighters who got him out of the elevator.

The elevator incident caused Hatcher to miss curfew, but he’s safe now, bless his heart. He has vowed to never ride that particular elevator again.

WWE: Michael Tarver on John Cena, Nexus, Summerslam and More

Recently, Tyrone Evans a.k.a. Michael Tarver was on the radio show Unplugged with JJ and Crelly. The full interview can be heard here. Here are the highlights, originally posted by prowrestling.net :

What the Nexus members were told prior to their Raw debut: Well, actually, we didn’t know anything until the night we showed up at the arena. We weren’t told anything, we showed up pre show, did our usual rehearsals and right before the show started we got pulled into an office and we were told there was a decision made about The Nexus. Wade Barrett was approached and he approached the rest of us and we all sat down and had this very intense meeting and agreed not to tell anyone in the Locke room. Basically we were told if this leaked out, it was coast us our jobs but if we did it correctly, the potential could be unbelievable.

“When I walked out there, I can even describe the feeling of walking out through the crowed and seeing people’s reaction. When we left, the arena was like a cold, dead silence and no one left(the arena). Like I said, we weren’t told much until the very last minute and the rest of the locker room didn’t even know and they started questioning us when they saw us warming up at the end of the very last match of the night as everyone was about to leave and we come out and destroy everything…. They told us two things; destroy everything and don’t touch the cameras. Apparently during the melee, there was a fan, and if you remember there was a bell ringing and no one there to ring it, a fan had reached over the guard rail and started ringing the bell.

What the Nexus members were told about the release of Daniel Bryan: “There were a lot of things floating around as far as the reason for that: one being that he choked out someone with a tie, that he spit in John Cena’s face, and we were never given deferent answer to why that happened. We were all surprised and we were all very much surprised at SummerSlam when he came back.

“We kind of had a clue he was coming back but we weren’t sure and WWE is really good about keeping their storylines behind closed doors to protect them… in most cases. We weren’t really told much; we were just very disappointed and surprised by it. I remember personally reaching out to him and never heard anything and I was like, ‘Ok, what’s going on?’ as I’m friends with him but you don’t know, it could have been a planned angle from the start.

Who or What was meant to be The Nexus’s “Higher Power”?
“As far as the story when, we has gotten a hint that there had been someone pulling the strings behind Wade Barrett as what was told to us and what we had to portray. It never came to light, who or what it may be. There was a lot of speculation with fans as far as who was doing the talking and who was doing the writing and who was pulling the strings. There was a lot of things

behind the scenes that the fans didn’t see that if they has seen, would have seen the Nexus in a new perspective on the entire thing.”

What lead to The Nexus being disbanded? “We honestly did not know. As far as what happened, we did not understand why we had to lose at SummerSlam but we had to understand and appreciate being there. In my opinion, I felt we could have come away with the victory there and it wouldn’t have hurt any of the Superstars that we were working with because they were long sine established and we were just getting established. As far as Darren Young getting eliminated, we were never told why, the fans were never told why then Skip Sheffield had a really bad injury to his leg and then my injury as well.”

His opinion on John Cena: “Professionally, I have the utmost respect for John Cena. I think John Cena is the face of the company and should be the fact of the company because there is no one there that can do it the way he does it. John Cena is who he is for a reason, I’ve never seen anyone work as hard as he does and the man is working (between) five and seven days a week for WWE, Basically, he is WWE. Personally, I don’t really care for him but it doesn’t matter if I care for him.”

His side of the story about John Cena purposely injuring him with a chair: That night, David Otunga and I knew that we were taking chair shots and we knew when we were taking them, something of that magnitude can be dangerous and we were prepared for it. I had my reservations about it because on an independent show in 2005, a guy I was working with hurt me pretty bad with a chair, hitting me in the back of the head and necking leading to me being temporally unconscious and paralyzed for 45 minutes so I had reservations about taking chair shots.

“(During the segment), I look over and see David Otunga taking his shot and it sounded like it was a lot harder than it show have been so as I prepared for mine, I felt it and it felt like he was trying to swing for a home run so I dropped out and I wasn’t selling it because I was legit hurt. As I’m laying there, I see David Otunga taking multiple chair shots, more than the one that we were told we were taking so when I saw that I decided to get out of there because I was thinking about what happened in 2005 and when I get up, I see part of a chair swinging towards me and I put my left arm up to protect myself. Now before I continue, when you are in a situation like that in pro

wrestling/sports entertainment and you know there is something that dangerous planned, there is no reason for you to have to protect yourself in that way from being legitimate hurt.

“There is a reason to protect yourself in a match to get that part over but to protect yourself like if you were getting shot at is something different. I’m not trying to say Cena was trying to maliciously hurt me, I’m just saying he wasn’t being very careful. So when he swung the chair, and I put my arm up to project myself, the point of the chair caught my left arm and immediately felt bones crack and knew something was seriously wrong so I ran because I wasn’t going to take another shot as I knew I couldn’t protect myself.

“I get backstage and its customary being a rookie, being as it is entertainment and we work together, for you to shake hands and thank the person, especially someone like John Cena, to shake his hand and thank him for that experience because he didn’t have to work with me or any of us for that matter. I’m in the back and I’m kicking all the trash cans and I’m angry and I’m trying not to yell because I didn’t want to lose my job. As he came back, I put my hand out and said, ‘thank you,’ and he just looked at me and walked past and of course I was even more angry. He made it about five more steps, looked over his shoulder, laughed and said, ‘How’s the arm?’ and I said, ‘It’s fine,’ and he laughed again and walked off.”

Other interview topics in the interview include: People comparing the Nexus to the New World Order, Tarver’s thoughts on Wade Barrett as a leader, his thoughts on CM Punk being given to Nexus, his thoughts on the concept of NXT, rumors that he was to portray a Virgil type character for Ted DiBiase Jr, what was planned before his WWE Release, his MMA Training and more in this hour-long interview.

I have to say, this interview is very interesting and helps elaborate on his rant on John Cena earlier this summer. It also is an interesting look into Nexus, which can be argued to be one of the WWE’s biggest busts since The Alliance in 2001, and a character that, in my opinion, had much room, to develop into a memorable one.

Good. Bad. I’m the guy with the voice.
